Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia on copper-based materials for nitrate-containing wastewater treatment

Nitrate(NO3-),as a typical contaminant that can cause eutroph-ication,disturb the natural nitrogen cycle and pose a great risk to human health,is widely distributed in various wastewaters,such as industrial,textile,and polluted ground wastewater[1].Stable nature of nitrate,high solubility and poor adsorption ability make deep removal of nitrate from wastewater an extremely difficult task.Biochemical denitrification processes are restricted due to their low efficiency,requirement of harsh conditions,and the gen-eration of excessive sludge[2].Therefore,researchers have shifted to conversion of nitrate into ammonium and thereafter combine the biochemical methods to achieve the total nitrogen(NH4+-N and NO3-N)removal from nitrate-containing wastewater.Electro-chemical technology provides an efficient and green approach for selective conversion of nitrate to ammonia,which could also be feasibly coupled with other denitrification methods(i.e.,anam-mox)for realizing the deep nitrogen removal[3].
