IFT140+/K14+cells function as stem/progenitor cells in salivary glands

INTRODUCTION Salivary glands secrete saliva, which is essential for maintaining oral microenvironments and health. However, salivary glands are prone to be damaged under several conditions, including radiation therapies targeting the head and neck region and autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome.1 Regenera-tive approaches based on activating tissue-resident stem/progenitor cells could potentially restore gland structure and function.2–6 Keratin-14+ (K14+) cells have gained increasing attention given that they are stem/progenitor cells that are actively involved in salivary gland development, homeostasis maintenance, and regeneration following injury.
